Illiteracy: 7% of nation's population (approx. 2,100,000)

 

Population Below Poverty Line: 31.3% of nation's population (approx. 13,150,000)

 

Population of Lima: 28% of nation's population (approx. 8,300,000)

 

Problems for Peruvian Children:

  • poverty: over 50% of the children 0 to 11 years old live in poverty
  • chronic malnutrition: about 30% of the children are affected by chronic malnutrition
  • low attainment of education: 25% of the children are involved in economic labor
  • a large percentage of children do not continue onto secondary school
  • children are not learning at expected education levels completion & quality are issues in education

 

Government of Peru Involvement:

  • the government is striving for higher enrollment in primary education
  • the government is working to enhance existing programs in nutrition, health, & education
